Save Your Sight With Lutein
The leading cause of blindness in people over 65 is something called AMD, or age-related macular degeneration. Research shows, however, that a high dietary intake of two antioxidant carotenoids — lutein and zeaxanthin – can do wonders to prevent AMD. These concentrate in the macula, which is the central part of the retina, and help us identify colors and see fine details. Lutein and zeaxanthin apparently protect the retina from oxidative damage. So, where to find these two micronutrients? The best place to get your fill is via egg yolks, corn, pumpkin, squash, red peppers, Brussels sprouts and leafy greens like collards, turnip greens or spinach.
