Men: Keep Your Testosterone Up
A debilitating imbalance that occurs in men as they get older is a decrease in the male hormone testosterone, while the female hormone estrogen stays at the same level or even increases. The problem is that testosterone gets converted to estrogen as you get older. The results can include everything from enlargement of the prostate to the development of male breasts. And just low testosterone by itself can lead to early Alzheimer’s disease, hip fractures and incontinence caused by that enlarged prostate. What to do? According to Michael Aziz, M.D., author of The Perfect 10 Diet, you should avoid coffee, which accelerates the conversion of testosterone to estrogen, and take 100 milligrams of zinc a day, which also blocks the conversion. P.S. Oysters are the best natural source of zinc, followed by crab and lobster.
